History

In 1983, Lama Ole Nydahl founded the Retreat Center Schwarzenberg at the request of the 16th Karmapa Rangjung Rigpe Dorje.

This was one of the first retreat centers in the West and an important step in the process of introducing this living form of Buddhism – with its timeless methods for working with mind – into our culture.

During the 1980’s, the friends who lived here worked with enthusiasm and idealism to create conditions for meditative retreats. From the very beginning, Lama Ole sent friends from all over the world to Schwarzenberg. His vision was, and is, that we meet each other on the basis of friendship and trust and that we live, learn and meditate together. Today, as then, these common experiences flow into the work in our associations and centers throughout the world.
